What is breast revision surgery?

Breast revision surgery is a corrective operation after previous breast surgery when asymmetry, shape, position or another persistent concern remains. The defined example plan on this page is a limited correction that does not require a new implant. The surgeon must first establish whether the concern comes from breast tissue, scars, skin, the implant pocket, healing or a separate medical problem.

Revision is not a simple repeat of the first operation and cannot guarantee identical breasts, invisible scars or a particular cup size. Who might consider a limited breast revision?

A surgeon may consider correction when the original operation has healed but a localised difference in shape, position or contour remains. The consultation should cover the original procedure, implant details if relevant, operative records, photographs over time, pregnancies, weight changes, symptoms, medicines, smoking status and previous wound or scar problems.

It is often sensible to wait for swelling and tissue changes to settle, although the appropriate interval varies. A new lump, persistent pain, sudden swelling, nipple discharge, skin change or one-sided change needs medical assessment before cosmetic revision. Surgery may be postponed if a medical condition affects healing or anaesthesia, the tissues are still changing or expectations are unrealistic.

How is the correction planned?

• care for complications outside the written agreement or after you return home.

Preparing for breast revision

• Share your original operation details, implant card if relevant, operative reports, imaging, photographs, pregnancies, weight changes, medicines, supplements, allergies and smoking status.
• Report new swelling, a lump, persistent pain, hardening, shape change, skin change or nipple discharge and complete clinically advised imaging before surgery.
• Explain what you want improved and confirm which correction is included without assuming that a lift, implant or capsule treatment is part of the plan.
• Follow instructions about smoking, alcohol, fasting, medicines and supplements. Never stop a prescribed blood thinner without clinical advice.

Recovery and follow-up

Swelling, bruising, soreness, tightness and temporary changes in breast sensation can occur. A support bra and, when used, drains require the care instructions supplied by the team. Avoid pressure, lifting and strenuous activity until cleared, and do not judge the final contour while swelling is present.

Revision tissue may heal less predictably because of previous scars and operations. Breast shape can change with weight, pregnancy, ageing and further healing, and a further procedure is not automatically appropriate. Attend the planned checks and keep your records for future clinicians.

Possible complications include bleeding or haematoma, infection, seroma, delayed healing, asymmetry, contour changes, altered sensation, fat necrosis, prominent scars, blood clots, anaesthetic complications and the possibility of further surgery. Contact the surgical team promptly about severe pain, heavy bleeding, fever, increasing redness, sudden swelling, shortness of breath, calf pain or another unexpected symptom.
