What is a zirconia crown?

A zirconia crown is a tooth-shaped restoration that covers a prepared natural tooth. Zirconia is a ceramic material; a dentist may recommend a zirconia-based or monolithic zirconia design depending on the tooth, bite, gum health, appearance goals and the amount of sound tooth remaining.

The crown is intended to restore a tooth that is weakened, broken, worn or extensively restored, but a crown is not automatically the right answer for every discoloured or damaged tooth. The dentist must check the tooth, gums, bite and any infection before planning treatment. Who might consider one zirconia crown?

A dentist may consider a crown when a natural tooth needs more coverage and support than a filling or smaller restoration can provide. Assessment should include decay or cracks, the remaining tooth structure, the gum margin, bite forces, oral hygiene, sensitivity, previous treatment and what you want the tooth to look and feel like.

Treatment may need to be delayed if there is active decay, an untreated infection, significant gum disease or an oral-health problem that has not been stabilised. If the nerve or blood supply is infected, root canal treatment may be needed before a crown; that treatment is not part of this price guide. A severely damaged tooth may need a different option, such as removal and replacement planning, rather than being crowned.

A crown is a restorative treatment for one tooth. It is not the same as a veneer, which covers only the front surface, an implant crown, which sits on an implant, or a multi-tooth smile package. The treatment and quote should match the tooth and the agreed clinical plan.

How is a zirconia crown planned and fitted?

• Examination and planning: the dentist checks the tooth, gums, bite, shade and any existing restoration, with imaging or other tests when clinically needed.
• Tooth preparation: a small amount of enamel and existing material may be removed to make room for the crown and create a stable foundation. The amount depends on the tooth and the chosen design.
• Impressions or scanning: a physical impression or digital scan records the prepared tooth and surrounding bite so the laboratory can make a restoration that fits the plan.
• Temporary protection: a temporary crown may be placed while the permanent zirconia crown is made, unless a suitable same-day workflow is agreed.
• Try-in and cementation: the dentist checks the shape, shade, contacts and bite before bonding or cementing the final crown. Adjustments may be needed to achieve a comfortable bite.

Some clinics can use CAD/CAM to make a crown in one visit, while laboratory-made treatment commonly needs more than one appointment. The dentist should confirm the material, workflow and number of visits. A post and core, root canal, gum treatment or additional tooth is a separate treatment unless itemised in writing.

Appointments, anaesthetic and your stay in Turkey

Crown preparation is usually performed with local anaesthetic when needed. You remain awake, and the dentist can provide further anaesthetic if you feel discomfort. The number and length of appointments depend on the tooth, laboratory workflow, any temporary crown and the checks required before final cementation.

This is dental treatment rather than an operation that normally requires hospital admission. If you are travelling, allow enough time for examination, tooth preparation, temporary protection, laboratory work when applicable, final fitting and a bite review. Do not book a return journey so tightly that there is no time to address an adjustment. Flights, hotel nights and a companion’s costs are separate unless expressly included in the written quote.

What may be included in the written package?

Ask for every service in writing rather than relying on “all-inclusive”. Depending on the agreed plan, the quote may identify:

• the dental examination and treatment plan for one named tooth;
• tooth preparation and one zirconia-based or monolithic zirconia crown;
• digital scanning or impressions and laboratory work;
• a temporary crown when clinically and technically required;
• trial fitting, cementation, bite checks and planned follow-up;
• imaging, medication, transfers or hotel nights if listed; and
• the confirmation that implant components, root canal treatment, post-core work and other teeth are not part of this example scope.

What may be outside the price?

• return flights, travel insurance, meals and personal spending;
• a companion’s travel, accommodation or other expenses;
• root canal treatment, post and core, gum treatment or extraction;
• an implant body, abutment or implant crown;
• additional teeth, veneers, bridges or a multi-tooth smile package;
• extra visits, special tests, additional laboratory work or extra hotel nights; and
• treatment for complications or dental problems outside the written agreement and after you return home.

Preparing for a zirconia crown

• Tell the dentist about pain, sensitivity, swelling, bleeding gums, loose restorations, grinding or clenching, medical conditions, allergies and medicines.
• Bring previous dental records and imaging when available, and identify the exact tooth or teeth you want assessed.
• Confirm whether the tooth needs a filling, root canal, post and core, gum treatment or another foundation step before a crown can be fitted.
• Discuss the proposed zirconia design, shade, temporary crown, number of appointments, laboratory workflow and bite adjustments before treatment.
• Follow instructions about eating, brushing, flossing, medication and local anaesthetic. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice.
• Arrange enough time for a final bite review before travelling home and keep the clinic’s contact route for unexpected symptoms.

Aftercare and long-term maintenance

It is common to have gum tenderness or temporary sensitivity after the tooth is prepared or the crown is fitted. Sensitivity to hot and cold can last for a short period, but persistent, severe or night-time pain needs dental review. Follow the dentist’s instructions about the temporary crown, brushing, flossing and foods that could dislodge or damage it.

After final cementation, brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, clean between the teeth each day and attend regular dental examinations. Avoid using the crown to bite very hard objects. If you clench or grind, ask whether a professionally made mouth guard is appropriate. Good cleaning around the crown margin helps protect the tooth and gums, but a crown is not indestructible and may need repair or replacement in the future.

Contact the dentist promptly if the crown feels loose, the bite remains high or painful, the restoration cracks or chips, a sharp edge irritates your tongue, there is a bad taste or odour, or the tooth develops worsening pain, swelling or sensitivity. The dentist should explain the risks, alternatives and follow-up route before you consent.
