What is breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammoplasty, removes selected breast tissue, fat and skin and reshapes the remaining breast to reduce size and improve proportion. The defined plan on this page covers both breasts, including the lift and contouring that may be needed as part of the reduction. It does not include implants.

People may consider reduction because of heaviness, discomfort, skin irritation, difficulty with exercise or the effect of breast size on clothing and daily life. Stable weight is helpful because later weight change, pregnancy or breastfeeding can alter the result. Preparing for breast reduction
