What is revision rhinoplasty?

Revision rhinoplasty, also called secondary rhinoplasty, is surgery on a nose that has already been operated on. It may address appearance, structure, breathing or a combination. Previous surgery can leave scar tissue, reduce available cartilage and change the support of the nose, so revision planning is more individual than primary rhinoplasty.

Who might consider revision rhinoplasty?

Patients may consider revision after healing when a structural or cosmetic concern remains, or when nasal breathing is still limited. The consultation should cover the original operation, operative records, previous grafts, symptoms, allergies, breathing pattern, medicines, smoking status and any history of infection, trauma or difficult healing.

Timing must be individualised because swelling and scar maturation can continue for a long time after rhinoplasty. A new blockage, bleeding, infection, severe pain or rapidly changing swelling needs medical review. Surgery may be postponed when the tissues are not ready, a medical condition affects anaesthesia or healing, or expectations are unrealistic.

How is a revision nose planned?

• Structural assessment: the surgeon examines the bridge, tip, septum, nasal valves, skin, scars and the balance of the nose with the face.
• Functional planning: breathing symptoms are assessed separately from appearance; a cosmetic change cannot be assumed to correct every airway problem.

Patients usually need observation and may stay overnight depending on the operation and facility. The written quote should identify the surgeon, anaesthesia, theatre and hospital fees, graft plan, tests, splint or dressings, medication, planned checks and discharge criteria.

Planning your stay in Istanbul

Arrange your trip around assessment, surgery, observation, splint removal or wound review and clearance to travel. Preparing for revision rhinoplasty

• Share previous operative reports, photographs, implant or graft details if relevant, breathing symptoms, allergies, medicines, supplements, smoking status and any healing problems.
• Explain whether your priority is appearance, breathing, pain, blockage or all of these, and bring realistic expectations about revision limits.
• Send clear photographs if requested, while remembering that photographs do not replace examination, internal assessment or functional review.

Recovery and follow-up
