What is back liposuction?

Back liposuction is body-contouring surgery that removes localised fat from a defined area of the back through a small cannula. It may be used to refine a fold around the bra line, upper back or another localised deposit when the skin has enough elasticity to contract. Who might consider limited back liposuction?

Surgeons may consider the procedure for healthy adults who are close to a stable weight and have a localised subcutaneous fat deposit that has not responded to sustainable diet and exercise. The assessment considers the thickness and distribution of fat, skin quality, posture and body shape, previous surgery, medicines, smoking status and your goals.

A realistic aim is a smoother transition in one defined area, not a guaranteed smaller clothing size, completely flat back or identical result on both sides. The plan may be postponed or changed if you are still planning substantial weight loss, have significant skin laxity, smoke against medical advice or have a health condition that increases surgical or healing risk.

Back areas and procedure limits

• Upper back or bra-line area: a selected fold can be treated if the surgeon confirms that the fullness is suitable for liposuction.
• Lower back or flank transition: a limited area may be contoured, but the waist, flanks and abdomen are separate zones unless written into the plan.
• Full back or 360 liposuction: treating several upper and lower back areas or adding the front and flanks changes the scope and price.

Preparing for back liposuction

• Share your medical history, medicines, supplements, allergies, previous back or abdominal surgery and any planned weight changes during assessment.
