What is breast implant replacement?

Breast implant replacement, also called implant exchange, removes existing breast implants and places new ones after the surgeon assesses the breast tissue and capsule. Implants are not lifetime devices and may need monitoring, replacement or removal over time. Who might consider an implant exchange?

Patients may consider replacement because an implant has aged, ruptured, moved, become uncomfortable, hardened or no longer matches their goals. The consultation should cover the original implant details, operative records, imaging, symptoms, pregnancies, weight changes, medicines, smoking status and any history of capsular contracture or wound problems.

Replacement alone may not correct stretched skin, sagging, asymmetry or a changed breast shape. A lift may be recommended, but a separate lift is outside this guide. A new breast lump, swelling, persistent pain, skin change or lymph-node concern needs medical investigation rather than an assumption that the implant simply needs changing.

How is the replacement planned?

Preparing for breast implant replacement
