Breast lift (mastopexy)

A breast lift — mastopexy in medical language, and often called a breast uplift in the UK — raises a breast that has dropped, removes the extra skin, and moves the nipple and areola to a higher position. It does not add cup size. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight change and time all stretch the skin; a lift tightens that envelope. It is not the same operation as an enlargement.

Who is a breast lift for?

Surgeons usually consider people who are close to a stable, healthy weight, who do not smoke, and who are bothered by breasts that sit low, have lost shape, or have nipples that rest below the crease when unsupported. Typical situations include after pregnancy or breastfeeding, after a large weight loss, or when one breast sits lower than the other. A cosmetic breast lift is not routinely NHS-funded.

The operation is often postponed if you still plan another pregnancy soon, if you hope to lose a large amount of weight, or if smoking or a long-term condition makes healing less safe. None of this is a promise that you are suitable. That decision is made after photographs, your history and a personal medical assessment.

What the operation aims to do

The realistic aims are a higher, firmer breast shape, a nipple and areola that sit in a more youthful position, and — if they have stretched — a smaller areola. Removing skin can make the breast look a little smaller; it does not round out the upper pole the way an implant would. The result is not the same on every chest, and no clinic can guarantee a particular look. A further pregnancy or a large weight change can stretch the tissues again.

Techniques used

The surgeon chooses the incision from how low the breast sits, not from a package name. A doughnut scar around the areola is not the same operation as a lollipop or an anchor.

• Periareolar (doughnut): a circle around the areola, used for a mild droop.
• Vertical (lollipop): the circle plus a line down to the fold, for a moderate drop.
• Inverted-T (anchor): the lollipop plus a line in the crease, when there is marked laxity.

Ptosis is the clinical word for that drop; the surgeon grades it after photographs and examination. Do not pick on the lowest price alone: a cheap doughnut scar will not correct severe droop. How long the operation takes

Theatre time is usually 2 to 3 hours. A doughnut lift can be shorter. An anchor lift, or a plan that also uses implants, can take longer. Combined operations add time. The written plan is the one that counts.

Anaesthetic

A breast lift is done under general anaesthetic. You are asleep for the whole operation. If a different plan is safer given your medical history, the anaesthetic team explains that before the day.

Hospital stay

You usually stay 1 night in hospital, sometimes 2. That is not the same as the total time in Istanbul. A surgical bra is fitted before you leave the ward.

How long to stay in Istanbul

Plan 7 to 10 nights in the city. That window covers the consultation, the operation, the hospital night, the first dressings and clearance to fly. Adverts of 5 to 7 nights rarely leave the same medical margin. The hospital stay sits inside those nights; it does not replace them. Discharge is signed by the surgeon — it is not an advertising date.

What the package includes

The written package is usually one figure for surgery, hospital and the hotel during check-ups. What to do — and not do — before surgery

What to do

• Send photographs and a clear history — pregnancies, breastfeeding, weight change, previous breast surgery — so you have a written quote before you book flights.
• Stay as close as you can to a stable weight. Large changes after the operation alter the result.
• Arrange someone to help you in the first days. You will not want to lift children or heavy bags, or raise your arms above shoulder height.
• Follow the hospital’s fasting instructions on the day. That list comes from the ward, not from a blog.

What not to do

• Do not stop or start medicines — including blood-thinners, anti-inflammatories or supplements — on your own. The surgeon and anaesthetic team tell you what to change and when.
• Do not smoke if the team has asked you to stop. Smoking reduces blood flow in the skin and raises the risk of poor healing. How long to stop is their instruction.
• Do not book a short city break. Five to seven nights is not the protocol here.
• Do not treat the operation as a breast enlargement. This page prices a lift without implants.

Recovery

Two timelines matter, and they are not the same.

Daily life and desk work. Many people manage short walks from the first day and return to light, desk-based work in 1 to 2 weeks. You wear a compression bra for several weeks. Swelling, tightness and a change in nipple sensation are common; sensation often returns over weeks or months, though it can take longer. Keep your arms from lifting above the shoulder until the team says otherwise.

Full recovery and sport. Heavy lifting, gym work and strenuous sport wait longer. Most people wait about six weeks before harder exercise; some need six to eight weeks before the team clears unrestricted training. The scar keeps settling for months; the shape you see after the initial recovery is not the final one.

Your own pace depends on the technique, your job and how you heal. Follow the written aftercare, not a generic calendar.
