Haemostasis means identifying and controlling bleeding before the incision is closed. It matters in breast augmentation because blood collecting in the implant pocket can create pressure, pain and asymmetry and may require a return to theatre. A haematoma is uncommon, but early recognition is more useful than reassurance based only on probability.
Prevention begins with history and medication review, continues with surgical visualisation and bleeding control, and extends into monitored recovery. No device or “bloodless” technique removes risk. The patient’s role is to follow individual instructions and report a sudden change rather than increase compression or medication independently.
Medication and health information change the plan
Anticoagulants, antiplatelet drugs, some painkillers and supplements can affect bleeding, as can an unrecognised clotting disorder or poorly controlled blood pressure. These medicines may also be medically essential. They must never be stopped or restarted using a generic list; the prescribing clinician and surgical team should coordinate the decision.
What careful haemostasis involves
The surgeon creates the pocket under direct control, treats visible bleeding points and reassesses before closure. Anaesthesia management, temperature and blood pressure also contribute. Drains are used selectively and do not prevent every haematoma. A quick operation is not beneficial if it replaces systematic inspection.
- A complete medicine and supplement list
- A plan for prescribed blood thinners
- Baseline assessment of asymmetry and swelling
- Written urgent-contact arrangements after discharge
The pattern of symptoms matters
Expected early tightness often affects both breasts and gradually settles. A haematoma may cause rapidly increasing one-sided swelling, severe pressure or pain, marked asymmetry, bruising, dizziness or weakness. These features need prompt clinical review. Heavy bleeding, fainting, chest pain or breathing difficulty requires emergency care.
Why follow-up should be accessible
When surgery is performed away from home, confirm who can examine the breast during the first days and what would delay travel. Sending a photograph may help triage, but it cannot measure blood loss, circulation or pressure inside the pocket. A clear escalation route is part of the procedure, not an optional package extra.
