What an Allurion gastric balloon package is
This stay places a swallowable Allurion balloon — a capsule you take with water, then filled once an X-ray confirms it has reached the stomach — so you feel full on less while it occupies space. Placement is not an endoscopy and not a general anaesthetic unless the paper names a rescue path. It is not a Medsil or Stella balloon put in through a scope, not a sleeve with a staple line, not a bypass, and not ESG stitches. The balloon is a temporary fill; it does not cut the stomach. After about four months the device is designed to empty and leave the gut on its own — that dwell is a product timetable, not a kilogram promise. Weight change still depends on what you drink and chew while it is in.
The written plan should identify the Allurion device, who confirms its position and fill on imaging, and the device’s intended dwell period. A connected scale, watch or app is included only if the provider’s written offer names it.
Who this package is for
Teams usually consider adults whose BMI sits in a range where a temporary swallowable balloon is still honest — often when diet has not been enough and a cut, a staple line or an endoscope is not the first step — who can accept nausea for the first days and a liquid-then-texture diet, and who will follow the programme after they fly. A large hiatus hernia, an active ulcer, previous stomach surgery, swallowing difficulty or a need for a staple line often points to an endoscopic balloon, sleeve, bypass or ESG instead. If the plan is a balloon that must be placed and later taken out through a scope, the Medsil/Stella page is the conversation.
The date is often postponed if a stomach finding makes a swallow unsafe, if a clotting or heart issue has not been cleared, or if pregnancy is possible. Send height, weight, medicines and any recent swallow or endoscopy notes if you have them. Suitability is confirmed in Istanbul before anyone fills a capsule. A sleeve “while we are there”, a Medsil balloon on the same day, or a hair transplant in the same week is not assumed.
What the all-inclusive stay covers
The written plan should identify the Allurion swallow sitting, imaging that confirms position and fill, the assessment and tests, the observation plan, and any connected scale, watch or app only when specified.
What sits outside this figure
A later endoscopy if the balloon does not pass as expected, a second balloon, extra months beyond its designed dwell, or a switch to an endoscopic device require separate confirmation. Filling should stop if the stomach cannot safely accommodate the device.
Clinic time, anaesthetic and nights in Istanbul
The plan allows two to four days in Istanbul for assessment, the swallow and fill, and observation during the first nausea window. Follow the provider’s discharge advice.
Placement is a clinic sitting: you swallow the capsule, then the team fills it after imaging confirms it is in the stomach. A general anaesthetic and an endoscope are not the usual path. Discharge is signed when you can keep sips down — it is not an advertising clock. There is no planned removal endoscopy at the end of the dwell unless something has gone off the map.
After the balloon is in
The first forty-eight to seventy-two hours are often nausea, cramp and a full feeling. Liquids first, then texture as written. Walk as you were shown. Desk work is often possible after a day or two if you are keeping fluids down. Fizzy drinks and large meals wait. The balloon is a tool for the months it stays, not a kilogram guarantee; when it empties, habits have to hold or the weight can return. Dietitian follow-up sits on the paper if named.
Red flags after you leave — vomiting you cannot stop, severe pain, a temperature that persists, black stool, or breathlessness — mean a local clinician or A&E first, then your coordinator. Take the note of the device with you.
Questions from you
These notes answer questions people raise before they accept a written treatment plan. They describe what that plan should make clear. They are not a promise that any partner hospital uses a particular technique, device or payment arrangement. With your consent, an enquiry may be shared with an authorised healthcare partner.
Why am I a candidate for this weight-loss procedure, and how do other illnesses change the choice?
Diabetes, sleep apnoea, blood pressure, medicines, earlier treatment and whether long-term follow-up is realistic have to be written for the person. A sleeve, a bypass, a balloon and endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty are not the same assessment. ASMBS describes ESG as an endoscopic option for selected adults who have not lost enough weight with lifestyle measures and medication, who are not ready for surgery, or whose surgical risk is higher. In most of that data the primary range is a BMI of 30–40, and a case outside it needs a separate written reason. ESG does not produce the same weight or metabolic effect as a sleeve or a bypass. A balloon does not take the place of that surgical assessment. Source: ASMBS ESG FAQ.
How do reflux or a hiatal hernia change the choice of sleeve, bypass, ESG or balloon?
Marked reflux or a hiatal hernia does not pass through the same door for a sleeve as it does for a volume-restricting balloon or ESG. A sleeve can increase reflux. In severe reflux, a bypass is discussed separately. Reflux symptoms, and endoscopy if it is needed, should be written before a balloon or ESG is chosen. This is not a promise that every case of reflux will settle with a bypass.
If an urgent problem or a nutritional deficiency appears after I go home, who follows it and how are the costs split?
The NHS asks for lifelong blood tests to look for vitamin deficiency, and for 999 or 111 when emergency symptoms appear. Blood tests, a dietitian visit, another endoscopy and a hospital stay should not be assumed to sit inside the original package after treatment abroad. Travel insurance usually does not cover surgical complications. Sources: NHS recovery after weight-loss surgery, NHS advice on cosmetic surgery abroad.
Can weight come back after a gastric balloon is removed?
Yes, weight regain can happen after a temporary balloon programme, although it is not inevitable and the amount varies. The balloon occupies space only while it is in place, so ask before treatment what nutrition and weight-maintenance support will continue after it is removed or passes. Further medication or procedures are individual decisions, not an automatic next step. The FDA explains that gastric balloons occupy space in the stomach and that some people cannot maintain weight loss even after device treatment. Confirm the specific balloon and aftercare plan with the provider. See the FDA overview of weight-loss and weight-management devices.
